Getting an infection from a nail salon is low but still very possible.
And although, I love Groupon as much as the next girl- sometimes I can’t help but wonder how a salon can afford to offer such low prices. Doesn’t Groupon take 50% of each sale?

To take precautions, I Google the company offering the deal and read any reviews I can find.
If they’re good, I’ll buy the package. If they’re bad, I won’t. If they’re in the middle, I’ll buy the package but if anything looks off at my appointment- I’m out of there!
I really don’t want to get nail fungus, or worse- herpes!

Here are a few guidelines and questions to ask when getting a manicure/pedicure:

  • Is the salon and your technician licensed?
  • Does your technician wash his/her hands after each client?
  • How does the salon clean it’s tools; with a sterilizer/UV light or a quick spray of alcohol? (hint: an alcohol spritz is not enough!)
  • Do they clean the pedicure bath in between clients?

So,  you love your mani/pedis and can’t give them up? Take a few precautions to protect yourself:

  • Bring your own tools (even your own nail polish). Some salons even offer their tools for your use only and will store them with your name on it.
  • Avoid razors, callus graters, and cuticle cutters. An open wound will allow bacteria to enter.
  • Even avoid shaving your legs before a pedicure appointment!
  • Look around for dust and clippings on the ground. If the place is dirty, cleanliness is not important to them.
  • Watch how they wash their foot baths. Hot, soapy water sprayed with disinfectant after each use will do the trick!
  • If you have an issue with one of your nails, make sure to point it out to your technician.
  • That being said, your pedicure or manicure should never hurt or sting!
  • If you feel something is out of place, follow your instincts and get out of there!
