The Science of the ‘Magic Number’: Why One Session is Never Enough
The most common question we receive at our Markham clinic is: ‘Can I just do one session?’ To understand why a series of treatments is mandatory, we have to look at the human hair growth cycle. Every hair on your body goes through three distinct phases: Anagen (active growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting).
Laser technology is only effective when the hair is in the Anagen phase, as this is the only time the hair shaft is physically attached to the follicle bulb. At any given moment, only about 15% to 20% of your body hair is in this active stage. This means that in your first session, we are only able to permanently disable about one-fifth of the total follicles in the area.
To achieve the industry-standard 80-90% permanent reduction, we must perform treatments spaced several weeks apart to ‘catch’ the remaining 80% of hairs as they rotate into their active growth phase. For the body, this usually requires 6 to 8 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart. For the face, where hair grows faster, sessions are typically spaced 4 weeks apart.
