Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? Here’s the Truth
Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction, not complete permanent removal.
What does “permanent reduction” mean?
Hair regrowth becomes:
- Thinner
- Lighter
- Less frequent
The Science of Permanent Reduction vs. Removal
One of the most common questions we hear at our Markham clinic is whether the hair will be gone ‘forever.’ To be clinically accurate, the FDA clears laser devices for permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. This distinction is important because your body is a biological organism that is constantly changing.
The laser works by delivering thermal energy to the hair follicle during its anagen (active growth) phase, effectively destroying the follicle’s ability to produce a new hair shaft. Once a follicle is destroyed, that specific follicle will not grow hair again. However, our bodies have thousands of ‘dormant’ follicles that can be triggered to become active later in life due to significant hormonal shifts—such as pregnancy, menopause, or changes in medication. This is why we recommend a course of 6–8 initial sessions to capture as many active follicles as possible, followed by a simple maintenance session once or twice a year to target any newly activated growth. By being transparent about this process, we ensure our clients achieve the most realistic and satisfying long-term results.
Why hair can come back
